Rookie Kelvin Hoefler of Brazil is the 2015 SLS Super Crown World Champion and he took out the tour’s heavyweights Luan Oliveira and Nyjah Huston, on his way to first place. This makes Kelvin the first-ever SLS rookie to win a Super Crown Championship, or any SLS stop for that matter.
Although a newcomer to Street League Skateboarding Hoefler is no stranger to international contest success. A true contest prodigy at just 21 years of age, he has won in South America, Africa, Europe and again in North America today. For that reason, it actually isn’t a surprise he came out on top. He is built to skate contests and was not fazed by the big obstacles on the course or the pressure in Chicago.
Hoefler qualified for the Nike SB SLS World Tour by placing third at the Tampa Pro contest, and on the tour he made the finals at every stop except for Barcelona. His ability to consistently land hard tricks at every stop literally got him to the Super Crown. Each time his name was called he dazzled the sold out crowd at UIC Pavilion, skating incredibly the entire day.
Although he won believe it or not Hoefler entered the Best Trick section in last place. His Run Section scores were 8.4 and 4.1, and knowing he had to step it up he unleashed a bevy of high scoring tricks when he needed them most. On his first attempt he got an 8.9 for a Kickflip Frontside Noseblunt. Then he got back to back Nine Club scores on rail tricks. The first was a 9.1 for a Halfcab Nosegrind Revert and the second was a Fullcab Backside Tailslide to Fakie for a 9.3. On his fourth attempt he tried to frontside flip the SLS logo on the big section’s stairs but missed.
Going into his final attempt Hoefler was tied atop the leaderboard with Nyjah Huston with 35.7 points, and needed an 8.5 to get into first place. He attempted the same Frontside Flip over the SLS logo but landed it this time, clearing a distance of 15 feet. The judges scored him an 8.5 and he sat in first place by a tenth of a point, waiting for everyone else to take their turns and hoping Nyjah Huston and Luan Oliveira couldn’t take him out.
Little did Hoefler know that the reality of the situation was that nobody left could pull it off. Landing that Frontside Flip sucked the air out of the building for some of the skaters and put an unfamiliar pressure on them that they had no answer for.
Following Hoefler was Paul Rodriguez, who didn’t have his best day skating and therefore was already out of contention. Chris Cole was next and because he was in sixth place he could only get third place with a 9.2 but he didn’t land his attempt. Shane O’Neill, who was in fourth place needed a 9.7 for first place, and he fell on his last try. Cody McEntire was in seventh place and had no shot at making the top three so he was out. Chaz Ortiz was in fifth and needed a 9.9 for third place. He landed a Kickflip Front Feeble on a rail for a 9.0 which moved him into fourth.
Then it was Oliveira and Huston’s turn and they were the two Hoefler was waiting to see skate because only they could knock him out of the top spot. In third place Oliveira needed a 9.5 for first place and he missed on a 360 Ollie over the SLS logo. Solidly in second place Huston needed an 8.8 to win. He attempted a Nollie Heelfip Backside Lipslide on the rail and landed it, but sketchy and was scored accordingly, earning an 8.2.
A clean landing probably would have earned him the Super Crown, but it was Hoefler’s to win today. He got on the tour with a third place showing at the Tampa Pro contest and took the Super Crown title with a special performance in Chicago, when it mattered most.
