Ten hand picked photos from SLS Munich by Gaston Francisco
We sat down with SLS Munich photographer, Gaston Francisco, and asked him to choose ten of his favorite photos from the weekend and tell us why. Here are the ones he chose and the reasons behind them to give you a little insight to what goes on when the TV cameras are on and off the air.
1. Tiago Lemos Nollie Frontside Nosegrind
This is Tiago´s second ever SLS contest and he already made it to the Final. I believe Tiago is going to be a staple figure in the Finals and I will not be surprised whenever he finally wins it. He has the tricks, the power and an immense pop as this enormous nollie frontisde nosegrind shows us. He was the only one to skate this rail nollie during the whole weekend!
2. Nyjah Huston Alley Oop Backside 180 Nosegrind
Nyjah is so good at skating that he can give himself the luxury of bringing new tricks to the SLS every year. Not only is he one of the most consistent skaters on this planet, but he can also come up with tricks that nobody else does.
3. Ishod Wair Drinking Beer
Ishod is one of the nicest skaters out there. He came to the SLS with an injury on his back so he couldn´t skate. However, he showed up everyday and hung out around the arena sharing smiles and good vibes as he tried to get as deep as possible into the german tradition of beer drinking.
4. Crowd Cheering
I´ve never been to any other skateboarding event where the crowd gets as hyped as they do on SLS. Munich was no different and the crowd made sure that skaters could hear them loud and clear.
5. Luan Oliveira Hardflip
Luan knows what he can do and he delivers. He found this line coming out of the bump and did two tricks out of it. The crowd was loving it and made sure he heard it while the VIPs made sure they caught it for their social media.
6. Nyjah Huston Faceplant
I saw Nyjah measuring this gap to rail during practice and asked him if he would try it. He told me he thought it was possible, but did not try it until the Finals came. He faceplanted on the rail on his first attempt only to get up, try it again to fall on his stomach on it. If he would have made it, he would have taken first place. He puts it all on the line and goes all in, every time. Just look at the crowd´s faces in the background, it was a heavy fall!
7. Evan Smith Frontside Flip Stalefish Disaster
During practice we get to see amazing tricks that do not always happen while skating the contest. Evan landed this first try, broke his board on the disaster and rode away from it. Unfortunately, he could not land it during his Run.
8. Evan Smith Lederhosen
Evan is a crowd favorite and things like this explain why. One of the SLS staff got this “Lederhosen” as a gift. This is a typical dress from the Bavarian region, which is where Munich is located. Evan saw it and thought it´d be a nice gesture for the German crowd to come out with it on. He was right – the crowd went wild when they saw him. What we were not expecting was for him to do a lien to backside disaster with it in those socks (sans shoes)! Evan brings the fun factor to SLS and it is a very refreshing thing to have in skateboarding nowadays.
9. Paul Rodriguez Switch Frontside Heelflip
Paul was on point throughout the whole weekend. From the first day of practice I could tell that he was going to be one of the contenders for the trophy. With tricks like this switch frontside heelflip down the double set, it was no wonder he walked away with his third ever trophy at SLS.
10. Paul Rodriguez Not So Private Moment
Paul won and went straight to kiss his girlfriend. Cameras were all around him and it was very difficult to get a flick of him. I got a little glimpse of what was happening and shot away. Unfortunately my focus was not fast enough to be perfect, but I still feel that even though technically it could be better, this photo has all of the ingredients: the cameras around him, the trophy in his hands, and his partner with him. Congratulations Paul, you deserved it!
