After four Select Series contests at Street League at X Games stops, the cream has risen to the top. With incredible consistency and previous wins in Brazil and Barcelona, Manny Santiago wrapped up his Select Series overall title and his spot in the 2014 SLS Nike SB World Tour.
The second spot, however, was still up for grabs in LA, and became a battle for points between Felipe Gustavo, Greg Lutzka, and Ryan Decenzo. And it went right to the wire, in the Final Impact Section, on the very last attempt. As Lutzka came unstuck on a frontside 180 switch 5-0 to revert, Decenzo stuck a 360 flip down the 12-foot long set of stairss. With his make, Decenzo narrowly won Select Series at X Games LA to take 100 points, and beat Lutzka and Felipe back in the Select Series for another year.
How close was it? Dropping the lowest score, Lutzka’s total for the year, with two second places (90 points each) and one third (85) is 265. Decenzo, with a sixth place (76 points), a second place (90), and a win in LA (100) is 266.
Decenzo edged Lutzka out of the 2014 SLS Nike SB World Tour by ONE POINT. It very literally and mathematically could not have been any closer.
Best of luck in the big league, Ryan. The competition just got a lot tougher, but we’ll get a preview of how he deals with the likes of Nyjah, P-Rod, and Cole: Decenzo is the Select Series event winner in LA, so he’ll face the SLS Pros in the Street League at X Games LA Prelims on Friday.
